Message from the Principal Dr. Rania Sadeq
Dear Parents,
Spring is in the air...Chicago style :-) and the month of March brought with it a lot of fun activities to our school. Our kids are gearing up for IOWA testing and then finals, and our teachers are working hard to ensure they are ready. We were faced with lots of challenges in the beginning of the year, but are excited about the progress our students are making in the classrooms.
So many events took place in the month of March, our 6th to 8th graders had wonderful results competing in Scholastic Bowl competitions. Our parents got to spend time with their little ones in the classroom during our Parent Nights. We chose our Yearbook Drawing Contest winners, stay tuned for that. Then we had our annual Arabic Spelling Bee, congratulations to all of our winners. Our 6 to 9 students had a great time at the theater, they watched the Charlotte's Web Play. Then we were all very ready for our Spring break! We are all excited about the month of April and hope we have lots of sunshine and warm weather.
Go Eagles!

Happenings in the Science Room
Hello 4-8th science parents it is hard to believe that it is spring and close to the end of the year given that Mother Nature has gone crazy! Despite the weather the show goes on in science.
All grade levels have been working hard to prepare for science fair which will happen mid April.
4th graders are studying about plants an animals including making ecosystems in a box, understanding the different connections between the biomes and how energy flows through the systems. We have begun our exploration about plants studying vascular and non vascular plants as well as how important pollinators are to not only the flowers but to our food supply.
5th graders did a beautiful job on their solar system models, really creative ways were used to represent the asteroid belts. Since we wrapped out the far reaches of our solar system, we are starting to study something a little closer to home the moon!
Biology students continue to get closer to wrapping up their study of the body as we have spent extensive time exploring the brain and the sensory systems associated with it. We were able to dissect a sheep brain and a cow eye. Students also spent some time exploring the important role of chemical messengers called hormones as we studied more about the endocrine system. We will end our time in biology with studying the immune system.
Chemistry students wrapped up their hydrocarbon unit including making biodiesel and testing its heating capabilities. Students presented their final hybrid car commercials and I was blown away by their creativity. We have a few comedians in our class for sure. We have official started Unit 4 which is one of my favorite on gases. This will include studying gases, gas laws, and kinetic molecular theory.
As we approach wrapping up the year, I encourage you to continue to explore the world with your kids. Use the big vocabulary, read the science news together, go to a science and technology center together. I’ve heard there is a maker exhibit going on in Chicago that you can make and take things such as circuits and 3-D printed objects! There are so many exciting things going on around us and this will help our kids connect the book content to the real world.

News from our Toddler Program (15months-3years)
Dear Toddler Families,
I hope everyone had a great spring break!
Our toddler friends seem rejuvenated after the spring holiday, and it is just such a joy to see them excited and enthusiastic about meeting their friends, and appreciating the new activities in the classroom.
In celebration of the spring, we have introduced new works to the classroom such as the bunny matching work, new spring textured books, and new sand paper letters. Currently, many toddler friends are focusing on the spindle work mathematics activity and the vehicle matching activity – social stimulating activities. However, since the weather is getting warmer, we are try go outside to see the Canadian geese and red robins. (kind reminder: please continue to bring hats / gloves for the children).
Additionally, thank you for the sharing basket every week – the children love it! Thank you all!
Much love,
Tayyaba, Shamim and Rena

News From The Montessori 6-9 (1st-3rd Grade)
Dear Parents:
We hope everyone had a relaxing Spring Break. During April and May we will be busy presenting lots of materials (new concepts). Please avoid vacations during this time. Your children have accomplished beyond our expectations. Let’s keep up this momentum for the next one and a half months of school.
April 12: Field Trip to Sci Tech in Aurora: Sack Lunch required
The First year students will continue working on the United States of America (practicing the fifty states) in history and geography. In zoology, the students will study parts of a mammal and life cycles of different animals. In math, the students will practice telling time, golden beads multiplication and division, and fractions. In language, the students will work on adjective study and chapter books.
The Second year students in math will continue working on fractions, types of angles, checkerboard: three digit multiplication, and stamp game division: three digit divisor. In zoology, the students will work on invertebrate animal study and different types of vertebrates. In language, the students will work on sentence analysis, grammar study, different verbs, and chapter books.
The Third year students will take the IOWA Test on April 23, 24 and 25th. We will do two weeks of intense test practice prior to the test. Please make sure your children sleep well and eat a healthy breakfast for those three weeks. Their psychological and physical well-being is very important during that time. Please make sure your children will not miss any practice time.
Along with test practice, the third year students will work on the history of the United States of America, practice all fifty states and their capitals, Government of U.S.A., Systems of the Human Body, Periodic Table, and Parts of an Atom.
*As always, your child's well-being is our priority. If there are any concerns, either contact us through the school e-mail, by phone, or send a note with your child.
Sincerely, The 6-9 Montessori Teachers

The month of March flew by! Students finished their How-To projects and enjoyed sharing treats and information with the class. Students also visited the roller rink for a STEM class about movement and skating. The month of April will be full of poetry! Students are practicing speaking, writing, and creating poetry. We hope to have some beautiful work to decorate our walls soon.
News From Middle School (6th - 8th)
The school year is finally starting to wrap up and middle school social studies is now coming upon our final units of study. The sixth graders are studying the civil rights movement and the struggle that African Americans faced in obtaining civil equality during the 1950s, 1960s, and beyond. Upon completing that unit, the sixth graders will finish out the year with a study of Vietnam and the end of the Cold War. We will also be assigning a final project for sixth grade social studies that will involve content from the entire year. This will be announced in the coming weeks and instructions will be sent home with each student.
For 7th and 8th graders, we are currently studying the late medieval period in Europe, focusing on the Crusades, the 100 Years War, the Black Death, and other related topics. Once that unit ends, we will finish up the year with a study of the Renaissance and Reformation. The course should end right around the year 1500, which is where world history will pick up with the second half of our course next school year (Modern World History). These world history students will also be getting a final project for the end of the year - it will likely be in the form of an essay, but nothing has been formally assigned yet. Instructions will be sent home when the essay is assigned.
Overall - final exams are also coming soon for all classes in the middle school. They are approximately one month away, starting during the week of May 7th (toward the end of that week). Students should begin the process of studying for exams as soon as possible. All late and missing work will need to be turned in by that week as well, as nothing can be accepted for credit after final exams.
Have a great Spring everyone! The end of the year is almost upon us…
-Mr. Ron Chernobrov
English:
We will continue to stay busy until the end of the school year! We have recently completed two novel studies and will be viewing the films and holding a potluck. Our next novel will be Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry--a 1976 novel by Mildred D. Taylor about racism in America during the Great Depression. The novel won the 1977 Newbery Medal. We will also cover a few more short stories, essays, current events, and poems.
We will be writing flash-fiction pieces—a shorter version of the short story. Students will work on creating strong characters through dialogue and description. We will also write another non-fiction essay, as well as letters. We will host a class reading at the end of the year to give students the opportunity to read anything they’ve written out loud. The class will give feedback about the piece following the read—in the model of a writer’s workshop. The middle schoolers also did peer-editing this semester and provided detailed feedback to two of their peers.

April 2018
3-6 yr. old Spanish classes practiced the Spanish alphabet as well as telling their age in Spanish. Our new unit explores common places in the community.
1st grade Spanish is using family terms to tell about people, their names, and ages.
2nd grade Spanish students are changing verb endings to tell about their activities and the activities of others.
The 3rd grade Spanish class is fully immersed in their novel Las Aventuras de Isabela. They've followed Isabela's adventures to the city of Guanajuato, México, where she's visited "una universidad" (a university), "una iglesia” (a church), "un mercado" (a market), "un parque” (a park), "un autobús" (a bus), and una zapatería (a shoe store). We also sampled fruit with chili powder and shared our opinions of this common Mexican treat!

This month has been busy! We have worked on many special projects that have helped enhance the language and learn lots of vocabulary. Some groups have focused on the weather and expressions and clothing related to the weather. Another has worked on adjectives, creating a “mi historia” poster and talking about family. The older kids worked on “la casa de mis sueños” in which they used an extendive vocabulary of expressions, verbs and adjectives related to the house. We have also been putting into practice what we have learned throughout the year!
