Happy February! We hope this newsletter finds you well. As we embark on another month of learning and growth, I wanted to welcome you to this latest edition of our newsletter. Our monthly newsletter is one of the ways we use to keep all parents of young and older children abreast of the great works our students and teachers do throughout all grades.
February is a very busy month for the Kindi community. This is just some of what we're working on: Parent Teacher Conferences, our 2nd Bake Sale, Quran Competition, preparing for the Wisconsin Timber-Lee Overnight Trip, present New STEAM and Robotics projects, Science Fair, Student Council functions, preparing for Ramadan Iftar/dinner and indoor and outdoor Field Trips amongst numerous other items. The school is a beehive of activities and you cannot miss the positive high energy around the building.
I want to celebrate our Junior High Volleyball Girls team of the championship of the Southwest Conference. They played well and won an intense finals game. I would like to congratulate them and their coaches for this achievement. They brought another 1st Place Trophy home.
As always, we encourage you to reach out to us with any questions or concerns. Our dedicated teachers and staff are here to support your child and help them reach their full potential. Thank you for entrusting us with your child's education and for being a great support for your children, our teachers, and the school. Hatem Elagha Executive Director Kindi Academy
Message from the Dean
Dear Eagles,
The first month after Winter Break brings lots of activities throughout the school. We had our Spelling Bee just a few weeks ago, our Science Fair is coming up, among other events like Field Trips and Spirit Week, too. Add in all the amazing learning experiences our kids are seeing daily in the classrooms, and you have an educational journey like none other! Like I always say, It’s a Great Day to be an Eagle!
Each month from now until the end of the year, we will spend a month focusing on a different character trait. This month, our focus throughout the school is on Kindness! The one thing that I’ve always loved about Kindi is the natural kindness I see throughout the school among teachers, students, parents, and the community. Let’s keep this going! Challenge your child to do as many kind things as they can in a day. At the end of the month, we will have a few children from each class be nominated for Eagle of the Month for displaying genuine kind acts throughout the month.
In other news, I want to remind everyone about our uniform policy. Please make sure your child(ren) are coming to school in the Kindi Uniforms (green/white polo with the logo, khaki pants/gym pants on gym days, etc.). For detailed information about the uniform policy, please see the School Handbook.
Thank you for all you do for our school community.
As always, Go Eagles!
Sevim Memisovski Dean of Students Kindi Academy
News from our 3-6 Classrooms
“The greatest gift we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.” ~Maria Montessori
Groundhog’s Day just passed, and Woodstock Willie did not see his shadow, which means we will have an early spring – we are so ready for it! January was slow-going despite starting after winter break and having a few snow days, but the children have been productive and busy! In lieu of winter, teachers presented the parts of a penguin and snowman and discussed how some animals migrate, hibernate, or adapt to the change in weather.
In language, depending on where each child is, students are continuing to learn letter sounds, read Bob Books, word build, read Primary Phonics books with comprehension questions, practice handwriting, and much more! Many kids have made leaps and bounds in math too! They are working on teens, tens, skip counting, addition, subtraction, place value, and even multiplication!
The school also had its first spirit week of 2024! From wearing your favorite jersey to dressing up in Palestinian colors to wearing comfy pajamas, the whole school enjoyed participating in spirit week at Kindi!
The highlight of the month was when Dave’s Traveling World of Reptiles visited Kindi for an in-school field trip! Children got to see and touch a lizard, a 50-pound turtle, and even a huge yellow python! They learned a lot of facts about the animals and asked some great questions too. The children were so brave around the animals, most more than even their teachers! In February, for the first time, children will enjoy a visit from SkyDome Planetarium! Students will go on a 45-minute journey through the universe while never leaving the school! An expert navigator will guide the children through the stars so they can learn about the solar system, constellations, and much more!
Towards the end of this month, we will have parent-teacher conferences to discuss the progress of your child. We look forward to speaking with parents and working together to help your child be successful!
Also, we would like to welcome Penelope (hamster) and Leo (Russian turtle) to Kindi Academy, Ms. Kelsey’s and Ms. Krystyn’s classroom pets! Stop by to say hello!

Updates from our spanish classroom
Spanish with Maestra Maria:
¡Hola Familias!
I hope all the families in our school have started this new year with great enthusiasm. This newsletter will summarize the work of my students during December and January.
The students in the 3-6 program have been focused on learning different aspects of winter. We worked with a new character named Timbo, who has a song that teaches the parts of the body, winter clothing, and the weather during winter. We also focused on expressing emotions in Spanish by playing with magical snowflakes; their emotions were visible when we were in the dark and lit a flashlight. We continue to review concepts we have previously covered, such as the alphabet, numbers, colors, and more.
First-grade students worked on the same concepts as the 3-6 program students but in more depth and with a focus on reading and writing. They worked on writing about 6 feelings happy, sad, tired, sick, bored, and energetic. Currently, they are working on the parts of the body. Additionally, they completed the Autumn project with Lola the Squirrel and wrote a story about autumn.
Second and third-grade students worked on the story "Pavo prepares his favorite cake." They also practiced questions like "Do you have...?" or "Do you like...?" They learned 12 feelings that we use every day in class to express how they feel. Each class also created and illustrated their own winter story.
Fourth-grade students finished Unit 2 of the book "¡Viva el español!" They worked on colors, shapes, animals, describing objects and animals, coordinating articles, names, verbs, and adjectives. They also worked on singular and plural, definite and indefinite articles. Currently, we are working on Unit 3, where we reviewed the days of the week, months of the year, and calendar-related vocabulary, and explored vocabulary related to different places in the city.
Fifth-grade students completed Unit 6 of the book, focusing on calendar vocabulary, and expressing preferences using the verb "gustar." We spent most of our time learning to conjugate verbs in the present tense, as well as using frequency adverbs like "Always," "Sometimes," and "Never." We are starting February by working on Unit 7; I will update you on our progress in the next newsletter.
¡Hasta pronto!
Maestra María Spanish with Maestra Alicia: We hope this letter finds you well! We wanted to take a moment to share with you the wonderful progress your children have made in their Spanish class over the past month. 5th. Grade In the past month, our students have been in the world of time-related vocabulary and expressions. They have been actively building their vocabulary with words and phrases related to measuring time. They've been exploring the language of clocks and calendars, gaining the tools to articulate different moments throughout the day. One of the key focuses has been on naming various times of the day. From "mañana" to "tarde" to "noche," your children are now equipped to describe different parts of the day in Spanish. Furthermore, they've been mastering expressions for telling time, such as "Son las ocho" (It's eight o'clock) and "Es la una" (It's one o'clock). To complement their understanding, students have also been introduced to the singular and plural forms of the verb "ser" (to be) when telling time. Additionally, students have been practicing interrogatives including "¿Qué hora es?" (What time is it?), "¿A qué hora?" (At what time?), and "¿Cuánto tiempo hay?" (How much time is there?). These interrogatives empower them to engage in meaningful conversations about time. As we transition into February, our focus will remain on strengthening their ability to ask and tell time confidently in Spanish.
6th Grade Your child has learned phrases and adjectives that help them communicate various aspects of personal identity, such as physical appearance and personality traits, for example “ Soy una persona muy organizada” (I am a very organized person). “Soy una chica joven (I am a young girl). The verb "ser" is a cornerstone in the Spanish language. Our students have been practicing conjugating and using "ser" to describe what someone is like.Understanding the usage of definite (el, la, los, las) and indefinite articles (un, una, unos, unas) is crucial for forming correct sentences in Spanish. Your child has been honing their skills in choosing the appropriate article based on gender, number, and context.
7th/8th Grade The verb "jugar" (to play) has been in our lessons as we delve into discussions about sports activities. Your child has been practicing how to use "jugar" to express their participation in various sports. Whether it's saying "Yo juego fútbol los sábados" (I play soccer on Saturdays) or "Ella juega baloncesto en el equipo de la escuela" (She plays basketball on the school team), our students have been gaining confidence in articulating their sporting interests and engagements. In addition we've explored the differences between "saber" (to know) and "conocer" (to know/meet) when discussing knowledge and familiarity. Students have been crafting sentences such as "Sé hablar español" (I know how to speak Spanish) and "Conozco bien la historia de México" (I know the history of Mexico well), demonstrating their grasp of these essential verbs in context.
9th and 10th Grade Throughout January, they've been focusing on sporting events, sports equipment, and healthy habits. In addition to vocabulary building, our students have been mastering essential grammatical concepts such as forming the preterite tense of regular -er and -ir verbs. By learning how to conjugate verbs in the past tense, they've been able to narrate events and experiences that occurred in the past. Furthermore, they've delved into demonstrative pronouns and adjectives, which are crucial for indicating specific objects or people in a sentence.
