Hope for Refugees
Hello All,
For each of the past five years we ran Pennies for Pasta to raise funds for children sick with Leukemia. This year we are directing our attention to the adversity and anguish of refugees. One country in which the continuing war exported close to 5 million refugees all over the world is Syria. The conflict in that country caused the exodus of innumerable counts of men, women, and children. Many families escaped the bane and annihilation of war only to meet the blight of living without shelter, water, or food. Refugees go through their days searching for the means to only stay alive and to hopefully see the sun rise for another day. The situation is miserable and the conditions are inhumane.
This year, we are trying to contribute our tiny part to alleviate the pains of this crisis. We are kickstarting the fundraising campaign Hope for Refugees.
Each student will be given a "Donation Tube" to fill with Coins and Bills. The campaign will start Tomorrow, Thursday, January 26th. Ms. Noura Almasri from the Syrian Forum for Refugees will initiate this noble event by coming to the school and talking to the students and teachers.
We kindly ask that parents and children donate all they can to hopefully ease this afflicted human condition. Your goodness will feed empty stomachs, wet dry lips, and warm a freezing body.
We will collect the Donation Tubes on Tuesday, February 21st. While we can come up with prizes for the most collecting student or class, and we might still do, we prefer to teach the students to help for the sake of help and not to expect any materialistic reward in return. Putting a smile on the face of a hungry kid is invaluable and worth more than mounds of gold!

Our Scholars at Work in Science!
Hello,
The Kindi Scientists have been hard at work since the end of winter break exploring the depths of space, becoming engineers, dissecting new and exciting things, and even learning how to do a little car shopping for the perfect green vehicle. The 8th graders wrapped up physics before break and have dived into the mystery that is life with an in depth study of biology. They are currently exploring cellular processes and soon diving into DNA!
7th graders are studying complex hydrocarbons and alternative energy.
6th graders are near to finishing their exploration of the body systems which included dissections of a chicken wing, sheep brain and cow eye. They are wrapping up with a bacterial sampling from different locations in the school using the humble potato.
5th graders are deep in the solar system and completed papers on their favorite planet and made some really great models of the solar system. Soon we will journey to Mars to use NASA inspired curriculum to build Mars rovers.
4th graders have grown into great little scientists, as they explored what it takes to be an engineer. They built boats and some pretty amazing bridges. Currently we are studying the wild world of weather! All my young minds are working hard designing projects for the science fair on March 24th. We have a amazing variety of topics from all sciences, engineering and even psychology to look forward too!

Toddler Room(15months to 3yrs)
Hello Toddler Families,
Welcome back from winter break! We hope everyone enjoyed their time together as a family. Our toddlers are very excited to see their friends and the new materials in the classroom. The main goal for our toddler environment is to help the children develop the skills to function independently and to cultivate curiosity. We have thoughtfully prepared the environment to nurture independence and concentration. We try to connect them to work that complements their interests and abilities.
Many of you have asked how you can support your child’s development at home. We urge you to provide your child with as many opportunities to be independent as possible. Here are some ideas:
1. Give your child more time to get ready in the morning
2. Involve your child in projects around the house
3. When your child says “I can’t”, find ways to encourage him/her and find ways to make the process more simple
4. If possible, let your child finish his/her activity uninterrupted. Hearing a child say “I did it” further affirms confidence, growth, mastery and the eagerness to learn
Announcements
• A special welcome to our newest friends, Musa Sarwar and Ammar Hussain! We are so excited to have you join us
• Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for this month! We will discuss your child’s growth and development, classroom activities and any topics important to you. Please contact Mrs. Tayyaba to schedule your time.
Stay Warm

A Montessori classroom is a peaceful environment. It is a place for a child to find his/her inner peace. Children have opportunity to choose tasks that satisfy their inner self leaving them to be at peace in their environment. We as teachers nurture this process of learning in the classroom. We further want to create a place where children are learning to be loving and caring in their community.
February seems the time to reinforce our lessons on Grace and Courtesy to inculcate the peace, loving and a caring environment. On a daily basis, we are modeling respect for materials, friends and all teachers. Many Practical life activities – care of oneself and care of plants in the class are ways to develop care within oneself. Kind words and acts are encouraged to build a strong classroom community. We read the book, “Peace Rose,” which helped the children understand the importance of using kind word to friends and caring for everyone’s feelings.
One of our great achievements at the school, in regards to sharing is the donations we are making for the Syrian refugees. The children are having an Learning to share with other people in world. This shows the act of kindness and care for our world.
As Montessori said, “… When we educate to cooperate and be in solidarity with one another, that day we will be educating for Peace.”
We follow this great leader to provide a peace loving environment to the children in our classrooms.
Presidents Day is celebrated this month. Many presidents will be remembered for their great works and their great love for this country. We will talk about some other great leaders around the world who promoted peace for the world. We will continue to expand our knowledge on continents. The children had a wonderful experience celebrating Chinese New Year.
This month, we will be holding parent child night. We do encourage all parents to attend this night, as the children show off their great achievements at school. This is a proud moment for your child. We do look forward to seeing you all for this wonderful event.
Have a great week ahead and stay warm.

Dear Parents:
A very Happy New Year to our students and their families. We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable winter break.
We hope everyone enjoyed the Winter Celebration. All of the students worked very hard to put on a great performance for their families and we are glad that all that hard work paid off.
Our first field trip of the New Year will be on Wednesday, January 25th, to LEGOLAND. Students will attend workshops according to their grade level. Please provide a disposable, sack lunch for your child.
We have entered the second half of the school year and it is going to be one busy rest of the school year. Our first year students in the month of January will be working on: parts of a reptile, parts of a leaf, land-forms, nouns, word study time, measurement and bead frame addition and subtraction.
The second year students in the month of January will be working on: fractions, types of roots and types of leaves, types of verbs, times tables, checkerboard multiplication and planet research: Mars, Africa continent study.
The third year students in the month of January will be working on: measuring angles using a protractor, area and perimeter, adding and subtracting fractions, long division, plant and animal cells, ancient civilizations, Asia continent study.
Soccer Shots’ first class will start on Friday, January 27th. If you would like to sign up your children in the program, please talk to Ms. Farheen in the office.
We are still in the Winter season and would like to remind parents to send their children with snow pants, snow boots, winter jackets, scarves, hats and gloves. Be sure to label your children’s belongings with his or her name. We suggest sending an extra pair of gloves or mittens to school with your child in the event a pair of mittens goes missing. Children who are not dressed appropriately for winter will not be permitted to play in the snow, but will be allowed to stay on the sidewalk instead.
If your child is sick, please keep him/her at home until they have been symptom free for twenty-four hours. We will certainly help your child make up any missed presentations and keep the homework until your child returns to school.
We have now entered the second half of the school year, and we're very excited about the new lessons we will be presenting to our students. Please do not take your child out of school for family vacations at this time. Students are feverishly learning new material at a voracious speed and to remove your child from the learning environment would be a great disservice. We all want what is best for the child, therefore, let's work together and put the child first. We thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
Arriving to school on time brings peace and harmony in a child’s day. Please allow an extra 15 minutes for the unforeseen circumstances that creep up in the morning. We are still in the middle of the winter season, please monitor the weather diligently the night before and plan ahead of time to leave home 15 minutes ahead of your original schedule.

News From 4th-5th Grade
The Upper Elementary students have been super busy in the month of January! In the classroom, 4th graders have been exploring 3-Dimensional shapes, applying the knowledge to real-life items. The first graders have taken this farther, calculating volume in a hands-on way. In geography, 4th graders are taking an in-depth look into North America. The 5th graders are mapping the 13 colonies, in conjunction with our social studies units.
Our trip to Legoland was a huge success! The students loved the exhibits and were able to create a story out of legos to share with the class.
In our Montessori classroom, students love to clean and maintain their environment. Students take great pride in dusting and organizing the classroom. The students even change our weekly jobs each Monday morning. Talk about team work! Everyone pitches in to get the class ready for next week’s learning. If only they would do this at home for their parents! The photos included in our newsletter are taken by the “photographer,” a job that changes each week.
Thank you
Ms. Cortney Kuzma

Language Arts:Jon Krakauer's gripping story of climbing Everest—Into Thin Air—has kept us in a state of both impending tragedy and awe. His heartbreaking tale of the ordeal has led to many good discussions on the tensions of risk-taking and caution. In The Story of My Life, we are empathizing with the loss of senses and a new acquisition of learning. Both Jon Krakauer and Helen Keller offer a unique look into the lives of others. We continue to improve our writing with ample assignments and will soon begin our short story revisions.
Thank you
Ms. Amy and Ms. Kathleen
The middle school students have been working hard during these winter months! We took a field trip to Legoland! We had an artist come in and teach us how to draw caricatures! And soon we will be going roller skating!
In 7th and 8th grade social studies, the students studied the rise of nationalism and how it affected countries around the world. We paid close attention to Latin American countries gained their independence from mother lands. Students completed a powerpoint presentation, set to music with an oral presentation from the first person point of view. They did a fantastic job of really getting into character. Students have also begun working on an Imperialism Research Poster project. During our study of foreign countries, we have learned that many were colonized but bigger, more dominant countries. Each student has chosen a smaller country to research and learn how they gained independence. From here, we will move into our study of World War I from the European perspective
In 6th grade social studies, we completed our unit on the study of how America became a world power. Students learned how Alaska and Hawaii came to be states. Each student gave a presentation about the annexation of Hawaii from perspectives of various people who were involved with it. They students dressed up as their character and gave a speech. They did a fantastic job! We have moved onto our study of World War I from the American perspective. Students are currently working on building a 3D model of a trench! We will also be analyzing the various from of propaganda used during the war.
