Message from the Principal
Dear Kindi Families,
Our Kindi Kindness initiative is underway. We will continue to be at our best behavior towards one another. We will also be focusing on how to be better citizens in the process. Please continue to talk to your children about proper behavior and kindness everyday, this is an ongoing Home-School-Community project.
Our kids had a wonderful time at NCI. They all had a great time with tons of funny stories to share. If your child did not go this year, please reach out to those who did for more information for next year’s NCI trip.
Finally, we ask that you excuse our “mess” for the next two months. As you all know, we will be in moving mode. So you will start seeing boxes in the corners of your child’s classroom. We will make sure everything is packed safely and securely away.

Dear Parents:
Yes! We did it again! We took the super exciting 3- day trip to the serene campus of Nature’s Classroom Institute in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. This is a unique educational program that teaches students through hands- on, real world activities. This two night and three day trip was well-managed and supervised by professional educators. They had a great time!

Happenings in the Science Room
Hello 4-8th Grade Parents,
I am so excited for spring I can taste it! Flowers blooming, green returning and finally able to come out of hibernation after this crazy winter. Spring at Kindi means science fair season. This years science fair will be April 19th and 20th. Students this month will be experimenting and gathering data for their projects. They also will be laying out their trifold boards for presentations...it is exciting stuff!
The fourth graders are working on ecosystems and the flow of energy through them. We have some smaller projects going in designing their own food webs and ecosystems in a box. They literally tied me up today as they built a large food web in our classroom!
The fifth graders have begun their models of the solar system project. They did a beautiful job learning the early astronomers, as well as Kepler’s Law of Planetary motion. Smark cookies we have here given this is pretty challenging stuff.
Bio students continue their exploration of the human body. We have started a project that will allow them to make small model bodies of some of the critical systems that we have studies. We are currently studying the ins and outs of the digestive and excretory system. Beyond the obvious chuckles, they are learning that these systems are so much more important than bathroom humor! I approach everything with a science foundation so we can understand why we function like we do.
Finally, my chemistry students have entered the world of organic chemistry and have been learning to name hydrocarbons and identifying functional groups attached to hydrocarbon chains. I am very pleased as they are treating it almost as a game show challenge. I am looking forward to making biodiesel with the class and having them design hybrid car commercials.
Nature’s Classroom was a lot of fun for the students and I think taught them a lot of skills that went beyond the classroom. Overall it was a very positive experience and I was pleased with how our students performed in the classes and in the dorms. A reflection of the events is that I heard that a lot of parents packed the bags for a student, I think all of them should learn to pack with you. We also have a lot of great veggie eaters based on how they used the salad bar which was exciting! Finally the fresh air and exercise did our kids wonders, better eating and sleeping habitats were seen from all grade levels. Get your kid out of the house and into the woods! There are no lions, tigers or bears that I am aware of…except the occasional cougar sighting
Have a wonderful March!

News from our Toddler Program (15months-3years)
Hello Toddler families,
Special thanks to all the parents who attended the parent-teacher conferences this year! As always, it was such a joy meeting with all of you!
Without further delay, lets jump into our update. Our toddlers have been a busy little bunch engaging in many learning experiences. They have been experimenting with color mixing in snow, making snow balls, walking in the snow, shoveling snow, and other sensorial activities, as well as opportunities to express their creativity---these engagements have helped ease us through the winter month.
We are also enjoying hands-on cooking experiences, where the children are engaged in the mixing and blending of ingredients, as well as practicing “turn taking” which as you know, for toddlers can be quite challenging. We have been making pancakes, and the they love it!
Our toddlers are learning sounds, shapes, spindles, and numbers with counters. We have been learning and using colors through paints, food coloring with droppers as well as markers and pastels to express and reflect through creative expressions.
We warmly welcome our new friends Aliya and Adris into our class.
Also, we are planning our End-of-Year Family field trip. If you have any suggestions on where our families and children should go this year, please share with us!
Reminders:
Thank you,
Toddler Staff

- Please label everything
- Send children loose clothes and easy shoes. (This allows the children to easily take off their clothes independently during our potty trainings, and makes this a more enjoyable and confidence building exercise for them)

News From The Montessori 3-6 (Preschool to KG)
Dear 3-6 Parents
Wow! What a February the 3 – 6 program had. The students have been working very hard and much progress is being made!
We started the month with an indoor field trip from Mary Macaroni. She invited the children to move their bodies through song and dance. They really enjoyed her visit.
All three classes joined together to read “Stone Soup”. The students were so excited about the opportunity to read as a whole followed by a book discussion on what the moral of the story was.
“It’s a cooking story!”
“You can make a soup from stone!”
“Stay away from hot things!!”
“Don’t eat beef bones.”
“Always share.”
“We should eat all the time.”
“Try not to lie.”
“When you are poor you should still share.”
“DON’T BE SNEAKY!!”
“When you don’t have a home or you can’t find your way home go to someone else’s house and tell them you want food.”
After all those wonderful observations, we came to the conclusion that the moral of the story is that even when you think you don’t have a lot, you always have something to give.
Each child was given the opportunity to bring a vegetable in to contribute to our very own Stone Soup. They were excited to prepare the vegetables for the soup. We were able to share a special lunch together the next day with our soup.
The Kindergarten students continued their map work by finishing up Africa. We have also continued to work on the clock. They have been introduced to money and fractions. We are looking forward to our April field trip to Whole Foods where they will actually get to handle money and be sure they get the right change back.
This month, the 3 – 6 teachers attended the American Illiniois Montessori School conference where there were dozens of reputable speakers. One thing that stuck out to all of us is the amount of sleep our students need. This is crucial to their brain development. When they are asleep, it gives the brain time to process everything it took in that day. This was the chart that was shared with us. We thought we would share it with you as we found it very informative.
Coming in March we will be implementing a new reading program. It is called One Book, One School. We are doing thing just as a 3 – 6 program. We are going to be reading “The Cricket in Times Square.”
A book and a schedule will be sent home with your child. We are really looking forward to building a community of children who enjoy reading.
Please mark your calendar for the upcoming Parent’s Night.
Ms. Brooke – March 13th @ 7-8pm
Ms. Katie – March 14th @ 7-8pm
Ms. Sujata – March 15th @ 7-8pm
Our students are working hard to prepare the classroom and show you the works that they enjoy and have mastered. Please be sure to RSVP to your classroom teacher by March 9th.
Finally! Thank you to all of the parents who were able to make it out to Parent Teacher Conferences. We really enjoyed have the time to connect with you and discuss your child’s progress.
Thank you

News From The Montessori 6-9 (1st-3rd Grade)
Dear Parents:
We had many special events in the month of February, which made it one of our busiest months of the school year. We are done with our parent/teacher conferences. Each conference was wholesome and productive. Thank you for coming on time to the conference. We enjoyed meeting with each one of you and sharing your child's progress.
The students researched and presented a famous African American hero during African American History Month. We were very excited to hear the students' reports and view their poster boards depicting their heroes.
Our annual Nature's Classroom Institute (NCI) overnight field trip was a huge success. The children enjoyed each and every minute of the overnight trip and wanted to stay even longer. We look forward to more students attending next year.
Our first year students are stepping in to the journey of grammar. They have been introduced to the first lesson about article and noun. In history, they are enjoying discussions related to food and nutrition. They understand the timeline and the events as they occurred during the Prehistoric, Egyptian, Greek, Middle Ages, Renaissance, and the Modern Time. The students are practicing and memorizing all of the fifty states in geography. In math, we will be working on abstract addition and subtraction, problem solving, money, measurement and fractions.
Our second year students are working on writing paragraphs and the grammar box for interjection in language. In math, the students are working on fractions, measurement and times tables 8. In geography, the students will work on advanced landforms, map skills and Africa country research.
Our third year students in math, they are learning equivalent fractions, reducing fractions, angles, estimation problem solving and long division. In science, the students are studying the systems of the body. In geography, the students are working on map skills and Asia country research.
All of the children have settled very well into the school routine. We are pleased with their accomplishments. We continue to assist our children to demonstrate a very high level of honesty, integrity, caring, respect for one another, discipline, self-control, teamwork, and time management skills. Each and every child is working to his/her maximum potential. We are proud of them.
Your children have achieved so much in the last seven months and we commend you for your support. We are blessed to have such great families and that makes Kindi Academy a very desirable school to be associated with!
March is here, but we still have cold weather. Please be sure to dress your children according to the weather. With the weather being unpredictable, it is absolutely necessary that the children are dressed appropriately for outdoor recess.
As always, your child's well-being is our priority. If there are any concerns, please contact the teacher immediately. Our school will be closed from March 23rd- April 1st . Have a safe and wonderful Spring Break. We will see you back on April 2nd .

News From Upper Elementary (4th-5th Grade)
Many Upper Elementary students successfully completed another great year at Nature's Classroom in Wisconsin. We were very excited to welcome them back to school last week!
This week, 5th graders are teaching our 4th graders how to use Google Slides, in preparation for our How-To Article slide shows. These are always a hit and we look forward to some great presentations before Spring Break.
We were also very fortunate to welcome two professional authors into our class. It was fun to ask questions and learn more about writing!

News From Middle School (6th - 8th)
Middle School social studies continues our journey through United States and World History this March. The 6th graders are just finishing their study of World War II, and will be moving on look at the Cold War and the Civil Rights movement later this month. The 7th and 8th graders are just starting their unit on medieval Europe, and this extensive topic will include the study of medieval kingdoms, feudalism, the crusades, and much more. In both classes we are also working hard on improving our geography skills by labeling maps and identifying important countries and physical features. Map quizzes will occur sporadically throughout the semester from now on.
For grammar, students just finished their study of prepositions. Everyone had the opportunity to take a re-test on the chapter to help improve their scores on that earlier unit. Following that, students are now just beginning their new unit — a study of sentence types, sentence structures, and punctuation. Additionally, students are making their way through their vocabulary workbooks, currently studying unit 12 for all grade levels. As always, there is a vocabulary and spelling test every two weeks based on that book (every other Friday).
This will be a busy month and as spring break approaches, the students will become more and more excitable and distracted. We will be working hard to keep the students focused at school, and we ask for your help at home to ensure that homework gets completed and studying is still occurring. We hope you all have a wonderful month and a relaxing spring break.
-Mr. Ron Chernobrov
The 7/8th graders have started The Book Thief --an intimate look into Nazi Germany and the book burnings. Each student will research and present a PowerPoint on a different historical aspects from the time: the ghettos, Nazi propaganda, and Hitler. We will strive to understand life under an authoritarian regime—complete with censorship and all. The 6th graders continue their journey through Tolkien’s The Hobbit. They have started an illustrated project mapping out the long journey of Bilbo and the dwarves.

News from Arabic
In our Arabic class we had fun practicing buying and selling clothes in our make-believe clothes school store. We had Native Arabic speaking visitors in our class to perform the practice. Students were challenged to use the Riyals in their dealings and count in Arabic.
The elementary grades were practicing clothing vocabulary as well.
Best Regards.

Spanish with Ms. Kimberly Jara
The 3-6 yr. old Spanish classes have learned terms for family members. We learned about tortillas and their importance in Mexican food, culture, and family life. We used a real tortilla press to flatten out dough and make "tortillas para mamá"!
1st grade Spanish students have learned an expanded list of food vocabulary. They are using the verb "quiero" to tell which food they want and adding the word "de" to specify the type or flavor of a certain food.
2nd grade Spanish students are learning to express where they are going and what they are doing within the school. This involves tackling -AR verb conjugation for subject-verb agreement. Their list of verbs includes "hablar" (to speak), "usar" (to use), and "estudiar" (to study).
3rd graders have begun their much anticipated Spanish novel: "Las Aventuras de Isabela." They will follow Isabela's adventures as she and her mother visit Guanajuato, Mexico! We will explore Mexican culture and food, as well as learn lots of high frequency Spanish vocabulary as we journey through!
